Every time I look at maps of the county I get a huge amount of fun out of the place names which go rattling around inside my head long after the map is folded up and put away.
So with memories of country dances from the sixties, sometimes three in one night risking life and limb and apologies to anyone who is fond of poetic ground rules I offer the following....

It was a Heilan night in Caithness wi' measures o' Old Pultney
When John O Groats met Rumster at e' dance in Thrumster
And offered her a dram

But Thurso Auchorn in and said Giesalittle for I'm Skinnet
And KnockedaGlass of Holbourn Head's Calder
All doun the Miden Pap

So Scrabster said I'll Sortat if you all just Stanstill
And he gathered up his Forss but wi' a Stemster in his e'en
He Latheroned Brabster in e' Gills instead

An' at jist made it Warse for then he'd met his Waterloo
And as they foucht e' floor became more Slickly wi' all e' Brough and Spittal
An' e Braal spread all around e' Oldhall country dance

Now Waas it jist a Keiss o' Noss misunderstanding
and Watten something Shurrey you shouldna' hev at dances in e' county
Or if they hedna' fought and Dunnet but just held Backlass stone cold sober
Where would be 'e fun in all o' 'at!
