WICK ACADEMY have confirmed the name of Barry Wilson as their new manager.
He will take up his duties at Harmsworth Park on October 29 with Richard Hughes, remaining as his assistant.
Hughes stepped into the breach in a caretaker role after Davie Kirkwood made a shock move to derby rivals, Brora Rangers.
Wilson has a considerable playing and coaching pedigree. He began his footballing career in the Highland League with Ross County. After a brief spell at Southampton he returned to County in 1992 for a handful of games before moving to Raith Rovers. Wilson had a
spent almost 2 years with Raith and was a member of their squad that played in the UEFA Cup in season 1994-95. In 1996 Wilson then signed for Inverness Caledonian Thistle where he helped them to the Third Division title in 1996-97.
He was sold to Livingston in 2000 and helped them gain promotion to the Scottish Premier League before he returned to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2003 where he spent a further 5 years before finishing his career with St Johnstone, Queen of the South, Peterhead and Elgin City.
Wilson holds Scottish First Division winner's medals, won with Caley Thistle, Livingston and Raith Rovers, a Scottish Third Division winner's medal, won with Caley Thistle and a Challenge Cup winner's medal, also won with Caley Thistle.
In July 2010 he became assistant manager to Ross Jack at Elgin City and he has an SFA A-Licence coaching certificate. This, along with his playing and coaching experience, were key factors in selecting him as the next manager of Wick Academy Football Club.
Academy are delighted that Richard has agreed to stay at the club.
Wick Academy chairman Colin Stewart commented: “We are also delighted that Barry has agreed to join us. He started his playing career in the Highland League so he knows the territory very well. He has a massive amount of footballing experience having played at a senior level, and was assistant Manager at Elgin City under Ross Jack.”
The chairman added: “I am also really pleased that Richard Hughes has agreed to stay at the club and work under Barry as his assistant. Richard has been an integral part of the fabric of this club for many years, both as a player, coach and manager in his own right. He stepped into the breach when Davie left and has done a great job since then.
It is understood that Wilson has no signed a contract but that both sides will review the situation at the end of the season.
