Test turnaround faster than ever
PATIENTS in the NHS Highland area receive a faster diagnosis than ever thanks to the efforts of a laboratory at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.
The Histopathology laboratory, which diagnoses and studies disease by examining cell and tissue samples, has recorded turnaround rates far exceeding the national average.
The laboratory receives tissue samples from patients from throughout the Highlands and Islands, and has been working hard to improve the time it takes to analyse these samples, so making it possible for quicker diagnosis and treatment.
Latest figures show that the department’s turnaround times, representing the length of time it takes to analyse samples, were on average 30% quicker than the national average in 2011/12.
This builds on the improvements the laboratory showed the previous year, when its times were around 20% above the national average.
Ryan Cooper, Healthcare Science Lead for NHS Highland, said: “We have worked hard to improve our efficiency and it’s great to see our efforts being reflected in our improved turnaround statistics, which follow Royal College of Pathologists’ guidelines.”
Mr Cooper added: “It’s an achievement we are all proud of, but this isn’t about us, it’s about the patients. Quicker turnarounds on our part can mean patients being treated sooner, with obvious consequences for their health and wellbeing.”
