For 18 months now I have had a little red cross instead of images on some web pages. They are usually links to other sites or pictures with a link behind them but I can still see images like the caithness.org one at the top of this page. I've tried everything to sort it but any computer geeks (used in the nicest possible way) out there able to help please???????????

try going into tools, internet options, advanced, scroll down to multimedia & make sure that the "Show pictures" tab is ticked. You may have to re-start before it takes effect.

well it sounds to me that you either need to install or Reinstall java or flash depending on what the website you are on .
Like the picture at the top of this screen after it says caithness.org is a java applet for advertising if you havent got java installed it will appear a blank square with a cross in it
If i get problems like that i just reinstall java. If its flash most websites it tells you that you requires macromedia flash. If you dont have java or not sure you hava it do a google search and you can download it .Or do as lucy sugested but have a look at the microsoft vm section to see if the java is enabled.

Before you reinstall anything, ajr, are you sure the pictures you can't see actually exist (I assume, since you still get the caithness.org logo at the top of this page that you can see some pictures, at least)?

If somebody removes the picture file from their server then any webpages that use that picture file will display a X instead.

The next time you come across such a page post the URL here and we can all take a look and see if we get the same issue...

As some has pointed out this can happen when a picture has een removed but the page not altered. Sometimes if a section is moved or altered all the files that used that thumbnal or picture become unlinked and it needs to be fixed.

Usually this will be in some of the older parts of the web site that we may not have looked at for a long time. We can often correct the problem if we know the page.

Can you give us an example of an image you can't view? Then we can see if others can view it, and what it is.

If I go onto ebay I can't see the main picture in the middle of the screen. I assume the featured items page? It is directly below All Categories in the search window thing, between speciality site and top tips etc to the right.

I get and have always had for months -

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Do you see it here? If you get a red cross, right-click it and choose 'show picture' from the menu... does that display it?

try disabling zone alarm for a test, as from the site it looks like it also has script blocking.

disabled zone alarm and it still doesn't work. I think it is an issue with BT Yahoo Browser. It seems to want to take over!!

Any ideas?

Shut up TIDES A PC's lifetime is around 3-5 years. After this length of time, your PC's memory reduces due to the programmes installed on your PC.

:)

Time for a reinstall me thinks, some parts in my PC are nearly 10, almost as old as wick_bot. I have almost enough parts that are over 5 years old to build a print server pc or if I'm feeling a bit flush I may get an IDE controller card and make it an MP3 server :) Mind you, I still have a voodoo3 somewhere so I may just build a media centre and hook it up to the TV :)

Back to the original problem...

I'll second SandTiger and recommend you go to mozilla.org and install Firefox. If you are still having problems with images showing on webpages afterwards then we will at least have ruled out it just being a browser problem.

Also Firefox is a far superior browser :D

Hi ajr I dont know how u are with fixing computers but i do know what it feels like when you cant get to the bottom of a problem why not just fromat the computer and reinstall windows back in again sometime as time goes on u loose files in your computer it start running slower and plays up somestime its good to reinstall windows again u would be suprised how quick it runs after a reinstall then that way u can eliminate the software
