When or if Scotland gets independance Alex Salmond wants Scottish police to be armed, the question is why does Salmond want Scotland turned into some kind of police state.

Yes before you know it Scotland will become a third world country police state, the freedoms we take for granted today will be taken away by Salmond!

Yeh! shoot a few citizens and they soon toe the line. Far more effective than helping them down the stairs.

Tonka raises a good point, but as usual this thread which could have spawned some interesting debate has been hijacked and turned into some spurious brain dumps by those with political agenda.
Do try to stay on point.

Tonka,
sure the mistake made by the officers at the scene was very unfortunate, and I am sure they did not deploy Taser on a whim. However to suggest that this might be a reason to forego the arming of our Police force is a bit extreme.
I think that there is a real place in our disintegrating society for an armed police force, and we will have to accept that there may be a few mistakes along the way.
And please orgers dont hit me with the "if it saves one life twaddle" This is about the greater good.

i agree with Neil on this but i don't think there is any need to arm the whole police force. all areas have an armed response unit that would soon be at any scene where needed. there are very few tiimes when a gun man opens fire most can be talked out of making a stupid move.

Come on, an old codger shuffling along at 3 mph using a white stick probably a bit deaf gets taken down by police by taser, My thoughts are thank god they were not armed with firearms, the poor officers must have been quaking in their boots and probably discharged the taser so they could run home and change their underwear confronted with that terrifying situation. But alls well he got an apology.

Police are humans in a uniform and will make mistakes. Arming them will cause unnecessary deaths. The person doing the shooting as well as the family of the person shot will have to live with this for the rest of their lives, from what I understand they (police) can call an armed unit at anytime if they feel the need and the armed unit who has constant specialist training can decide to shoot or not.

They have tasers which do not kill but will disable someone which to me makes sense.

The police will never win no matter what they do some one somewhere will always have a swipe at them. All in all they do a great job and as said in the previous post they are only human.

I agree with your last sentence but the evidence says different in this case, surely the ones involved should at the very least get a few more weeks training.
