HIGHLAND Council planners have been accused of trying to slip small-scale wind farms under the radar, in an effort to meet Scottish Government targets of producing all of the country’s electricity through renewables, by 2020. Residents who live close to the site of a proposed development to erect a 67m 900KW wind turbine near the summit of Olrig Hill, the highest in the locality, have blasted the authority for failing to notify them about the application.
STUDENTS AT Wick High School have become among the first in Scotland to take part in an initiative which challenges teenagers to come up with ideas for digital products that would prove a hit on the High Street. More than 50 pupils are taking part in Apps for Good, an award-winning course where young people learn to create imaginative mobile apps that change their world.
US Climate change Minister Ed Davey has underlined the key role the coalition government foresees the Pentland Firth having, in meeting the country’s future energy needs. Speaking in Wick on Wednesday, Mr Davey said it was vital the potential for marine and tidal energy development is realised in the far North of Scotland.
EUROPE’S largest intact expanse of blanket bog, is in line to receive major funding to go towards its restoration which could lead to it becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Flow to the Future, an ambitious plan to restore seven square miles of globally-important peatlands in Caithness and North Sutherland, has passed the first round to receive £4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
A ROYAL Navy sailor from Wick has told of his recent experiences with a NATO task group in the Black Sea and Mediterranean. Twenty-four-year-old Leading Seaman (mine welfare) Stuart Campbell, is currently serving on board HMS Blyth one of the navy’s Sandown-class mine counter measures vessels. It is the former Wick High School’s pupil’s sixth deployment with the navy, since join in 2005.
A GROUP of Caithnessians recently had the opportunity to get to grips with the world of undersea robotics. The short training programme was delivered by Wick-based specialist subsea training company, Mackay Underwater Technology Ltd. It is one of a number it provides to service the needs of the offshore oil and gas industry, though it is also aiming to target those involved in the fledgling marine energy industry in the Pentland Firth and Orkney waters
WICK Academy will not be appointing a permanent manager until after the North of Scotland Cup. Chairman Colin Stewart said that the executive committee will be taking the time to find a successor to Davie Kirkwood, who left the club in August to join local rivals Brora Rangers.
