Emergency services must not be pestered - sheriff

A SHERIFF warned a woman, who made a nuisance phone call to the emergency service that they must not be plagued by time-wasters.
Carole Cowie, of Wyebank, West Murkle, Thurso, sent a 999-message from her home, on May 26, requesting an ambulance so that she could be "sectioned". She pleaded guilty, at Wick Sheriff Court, yesterday, and also admitted abusive behaviour and a record.
The 44-year-old was said to have sought help for her drink problem.
Sheriff Andrew Berry acknowledged her efforts but said that he had to bear in mind that the police and other services must not be “pestered” by being diverted from legitimate criminal investigations and other responsibilities.
Cowie was ordered to carry out 100 unpaid community service.

Swore at police

THE SHERIFF has called for a psychiatric report on a persistent Thurso offender.
The accused, Dominic Long, admitted charges of vandalism and abusive behaviour, in his latest appearance.
Appearing from custody, the accused who lives at 7 Ormlie Crescent, Thurso, was said to have smashed a window at a house in the town’s Queen’s Square, on Wednesday night and shouted and swore at police officers while being driven to Wick police station under arrest.
Calling for a psychiatric report, Sheriff Andrew Berry said he wasn’t sure if it was necessary but he felt he was duty bound to request one. He granted the 17-year-old bail, expressing the hope that he wouldn’t "let the court down".
Long, who has a record, will reappear for sentence on October 29 and will be subject to a 7pm-7am curfew.
