HIGHLAND COUNCIL is to embark on a programme of repair works to war memorials in the Highlands ahead of the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1 in 2014. Several of them are in Caithness.
The majority of the council’s 165 memorials have been inspected to assess the level of work required to bring them up to a good standard.
Whilst most are in a good condition, 47 require repair, including structural repairs, re-pointing, repainting and re-lettering.
Some memorials are listed structures and will require approval from Historic Scotland before any specialist work can be undertaken.
The council is to earmark funds towards the costs of the works, estimated to cost £250,000 and will seek external funding sources to complete the project in time for the anniversary.
Councillor Graham Phillips, Chairman of the Transport Environmental and Community Services Committee said: “This is an important project as war memorials stand at the heart of almost every community throughout the Highlands in recognising those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.”
