The bubbly flows for cyclists at the finishing post

TWO intrepid cyclists got a champagne reception when they crossed the finishing line at John O’ Groats, on Saturday at the end of their 1000-mile marathon from Land's End.
Local woman Kate Burt and Julie-Anne Mowat took on the challenge to raise cash for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Anne Mowat, Kate’s mother and Julie-Anne’s aunt, died in May last year, after losing a three-years battle with cancer and the pair decided to do something in her memory. The duo experienced some rough, rainy spells during their marathon, but the weather on the whole was sunny, showing the countryside at its best.
The cycling pair's fundraising total had topped the £5000 mark before they hit the road, on August 25, and well-wishers chipped in on the way. The total will be boosted by the efforts of pupils and staff of Canisbay school where Anne Mowat taught for 20 years. They are matching the cyclists’ fundraising, mile-for-mile, through their own cycling and walking marathons, locally.
Kate us a self-employed fitness instructor and Julie-Anne works as a theatre nurse at Caithness General Hospital, Wick.
