Scorries make hard work of it on their home turf

WICK ACADEMY proved there is life after Kirkwood by giving Lossie a ‘licking’ in an eight-goal thriller, but, boy, did they make heavy weather of it!
In a game of missed chances, including a penalty, the Scorries eventually eclipsed the Coasters 5-3, the victory being sweetened by the news that their derby rival, Brora, who caused a furore by poaching the Wick manager, Davie Kirkwood, crashed 3-0 at the hands of Fraserburgh.
Academy ralled from a 2-0 opening deficit, courtesy of an own goal and a Davie Allan strike, to square things at the break. The second half produced another 45-minute tussle with the lead switching back and fore, before the homsters overtook the ‘pointless’ visitors leaving them anchored at the bottom of the league table . The second half, the goals came from on-form Gary Weir, Sam Mackay and a Richard Macadie effort, putting the points well beyond 10-man Lossie's reach.
The scoreline belied Academy’s performance with an organised Lossie side frequently opening up their opponent’ defence in fast-moving attacks and picking up gift goals. Had there been better finishing by the visiting outfit, the outcome could have been drastically different.
Wick leapfrog Brora three places above their Sutherland rivals, into third place in the league table, a point behind, a clutch of glubs Formartine, Deveronvale, Nairn County, Clach and Huntly, all of whom are three points behind leaders Cove Rangers, who lead with 13 points.
Academy official, Ken Wood broadcast a best-behaviour appeal to fans on the park’s public address system, ahead of what will be a tension-filled, cup clash against Brora at the Harmsworth.
