Other woman was drinking companion claimed accused
A THURSO man, who damaged his wife’s car after she found him with another woman at their home, has had his sentence suspended yesterday.
Michael Aikman (46) previously admitted threatening or abusive behaviour. The offshore worker went for a few drinks after coming ashore on August 11. His wife Jacqueline stayed with her mother.
But when Mrs Aikman returned home, she found a woman in the house with her husband. Mrs Aikman left, and got into her car but her husband followed her, “lost his temper”, and smashed one of the vehicle’s windows. When interviewed by police the accused claimed that the woman had been someone he had been drinking with and maintained his wife had misinterpreted the situation.
Sheriff Andrew Berry who saw a background report, at Wick Sheriff Court, yesterday, deferred sentence for six months to allow Mr Aikman, of Macaulay View, Thurso, an opportunity to demonstrate he can behave himself. The court was told he had paid for the damage to the car.
A bail condition banning the accused from contacting his wife was lifted so that he could investigate the possibility of reconciliation. The sheriff suggested that initial soundings should be made through a third party .
Accused unhappy with remand decision
A WICK woman contesting charges of police assault and threatening behaviour, indicated she will appeal against a sheriff’s decision to remand her, pending her trial.
Cheryl Fleming (40) had earlier appeared from custody to deny the five charges. These allege that she twice assaulted Constables Amy Cameron and Susan Gunn by kicking them and shouting and swearing.
The offences are alleged to have occurred in Kennedy Terrace, Wick and at the local police station.
Rejecting a bail application, Sheriff Berry said that, with one exception, Fleming’s conviction since 2005 had involved breaches of bail.
Fleming, of 30 Huddart Street, Wick, will stand trial on October 22.
Tip-off led to drinks-driver
POLICE located a car following a tip-off and the driver was found to be over the drinks-driving limit.
David Haggarty (34) admitted the offence. He was fined £300 and banned from driving for a year. The accused was found to have a breath-alcohol level of 57 micrograms – the limit is 35mgs after being arrested in Bridge Street, Wick on June 24.
Haggarty, of 7 Achingale Place, Watten, was advised that he could reduce the ban by three months if he successfully completed the drinks drivers’ rehabilitation course.
