A house I was looking at had a sizeable tank above ground n the garden from which emitted a rumbling sound. I was told it was a rumbling drain, but the person I was with had no idea what it was, other than being a form of drainage. I've googled this and not really found any answers. How do they work? Given that the rumbling sound was continuous I assume that the system is driven by some external source?

Could it be a Klargester?

Rumbling drain is the outfall pipe from the drainage treatment plant, it's similar to a soakaway system but only a single pipe possibly discharging to the ditch.

Thank you Kevin. I've had a look at the Klargester website and have found the beast I saw. Thanks again.
