Teenager whose denial of phone theft was the naked truth admits to stealing cigarettes from a Thurso filling station

A TEENAGER, who stripped naked to prove he didn’t pocket a phone that went missing at his birthday party, was back in court yesterday for stealing cigarettes.
Dominic Long appeared from custody and admitted the theft from Thurso’s Pennyland filling station on Friday, while on bail, and an extensive record.
Wick Sheriff Court was told that suspicion fell on the 17-year-old, after a handful of cigarette cartons disappeared on Friday. Police had him "bang to rights" after seeing CCTV footage and receiving an eye-witness account.
Sentence was deferred until September 5 when Sheriff Andrew Berry will see a background report he called for last week when Long, of Ormlie Crescent, Thurso, admitted disorderly conduct. That offence occurred on June 24, at a party the accused threw to celebrate his birthday and release from Polmont Young Offenders Centre where had completed a four-month sentence.
The court was told that suspicion fell on Long - he has a record for dishonesty - when the mobile phone went missing at the party in Thurso’s Bank Court. In order to prove his innocence, he stripped off to his birthday suit but not everyone took the incident in jest and the matter was reported to the police.
The background report the sheriff will see next month will include a psychological assessment of the accused.
