A PLAN to realign Berriedale Braes could be out TO tender next year and completed by 2012. That is the hope of Caithness Transport Forum chairman, John Green, after learning that a total of £220,000 has been available to get the long-sought-after improvement, “shovel-ready”. Welcoming the funding as “good news” he hopes it could lead to other improvements on the A9.

HIGHLAND Council has been accused of failing to carry out its obligations to conduct its own environmental assessments for wind turbine developments. Thrumster Estate director, Islay MaCleod, claims the planning authority has shown a total dereliction of duty by not carrying out checks which it is required to do. She said that the council has to complete its own environmental assessment of a wind turbine proposal for ventures which could impact on the peatland environment. She claims that a directive lays down that such studies had to be carried out in consultations with the council’s geotechnical unit.

RECRUITING local people to “reap the rewards of responsibility” is a blueprint for how wind farm developers should engage with Caithness communities according to a landward councillor. Alex MacLeod believes local residents should get involved with a new panel to help decide how a £150,000-a-year community benefit fund should be distributed. Nominations are being invited from residents of Latheron, Lybster and Clyth, Tannach and district and Watten community council areas, to join the E.O.N. The fund will support constituted community groups, not-for-profit organisations and registered charities providing service and activities for the benefit of the area.
