Nipping partner's breast was horseplay

A YOUNG man, who nipped one of his partner’s breast with a garlic press, was jailed
for six months yesterday.
Angelo Begg (21) dismissed the bizarre incident as the sort of horseplay he had engaged
in, previously, with Tanya Verity, Wick Sheriff Court heard.
The bizarre incident happened at her mother’s home at Tanhead, in the Scarfskerry
area of Caithness. The couple had been living in a caravan there but went into the
house to cook an evening meal, on June 15.
David Barclay, prosecuting, said that Begg picked up the garlic gadget, put it against
his partner’s left breast and pressed it, inflicting a small bruise and reducing Ms Verity
to tears. Begg told police he had meant no harm and said there had been similar
horse-play in the past.
Mr Barclay stressed there was no suggestion of any sexual implications.
Commenting on a background report before the court, solicitor Jo McDonald
said that it suggested Begg who admitted a charge of assault, was “immature”.
He had not come from the strongest of family foundations and this had resulted in him
having very little guidance.
The accused intended implementing a phychiatrict’s recommendation that he seek
help from his GP.
Ms McDonald said that Begg's conduct had cost him his relationship with Ms Verity
and added: “Clearly that has been quite devastating for him.”
Sheriff Andrew Berry highlighted Begg’s record which included assaults and
breaches of bail and told him: “This was a very unpleasant assault... completely
without justification.”
Begg, who was now said to be living with his brother at an undisclosed address,
had the sentence backdated to June 18 when he was arrested.

Drug helped him to sleep

A MAN, who admitted having been in possession of a Class C drug, said it was for
his own personal use to help him sleep.
Police recovered a tub containing 84 diazepam pills from Edward Shearmith’s home
in Riverside Terrace, Thurso on April 10. The court heard that he was now getting
the medication he required, legitmately, from his GP.
Sheriff Berry ordered Shearsmith (34) to carry out 40 hours unpaid community work
and warned the accused, who has three previous conviction for drugs possession, that
if he continue such offending, an interpretation of a more serious nature might be
put on the situation.

Drug supply alleged

A WICK man is to stand trial on a drugs charge.
Robert Barnetson (40) of Huddart Street, Wick, appeared on indictment and
denied the charge.
It alleges that he was concerned in the supply of cannabis resin at
West Yarrows Croft, Thrumster, on October 14.
The case was continued until July 20, after the court heard that there had been
a change in Barnetson’s legal representation.
