Some drivers still prepared to run the risk behind the wheel
MOTORISTS who persist in drink driving face being on the losing side during the summer - losing their licence and perhaps their vehicle and livelihood too.
At the half-way stage in the ACPOS Summer Drink and Drug Driving Campaign, results show that people are still ignoring warnings and continuing to choose to drive whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.
In the Northern Constabulary force area, 11 people were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, which is down on the figures from last year, 14 drink drivers and 4 drug drivers in the 2011 campaign.
A 38-year-old man is due to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court in connection with alleged drink driving and speeding offences. His car was stopped on the A9 after being detected travelling at speeds in excess of 120mph.
Figures for the first week of the campaign (June 4 –11) show that across Scotland, 111 people have been reported for drink driving and in addition three people were detected driving whilst being unfit through alcohol with five unfit through drugs.
The Force's Road Safety officer Laura Fisher said: "Whilst it is pleasing to note a reduction in the number of drink/drug drivers caught compared to last year, the message is still clearly not getting out to some people. It is disappointing to note that 11 people were dealt with for drink driving offences during week one of the campaign in our force area.
Ms Fisher added: "We will continue to deal robustly with those who engage in this type of dangerous and illegal behaviour, which poses a risk to drivers, pedestrians and other road users. I would encourage the public who suspect anyone of driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs to contact Police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
Offenders stand to lose not only their licence but also their vehicle if they are detected drink/drug driving, thanks to the continuation of the Vehicle Forfeiture Scheme.
