Woolworths brought them back out about 10 years ago but since they have gone to the wall I don't know of any other retailer that stocks them. I work with someone who's nickname is Spangle, you're more than welcome to come and take him, it would please us all no end. :-)

A web site that has some of the old sweets is http://www.aquarterof.co.uk (http://www.aquarterof.co.uk/) but they say no spangles available. Still plenty of other old sweets on this site if your a retro sweetie eater.

Maybe not the same as spending a few pennies down at the local shop but at least they offer some nostalgic tasty items.

Does a local shop still offer cheap sweeties from the counter?

Spangles were brought back in the market in the 90's but now have been withdrawn.

Nope, they're not on sale any more :(

But, if you click here https://www.facebook.com/sweetsandcandy/posts/389506617738515?comment_id=4832645&offset=0&total_comments=5 you can join a facebook petition to bring them back!!

Personally, I'd like to see Pacers and Highland Mint Toffee back :)

In case anyone missed them there have been earlier threads on old sweets and might be useful for any nostalgia cravings -

I love going into old fashioned sweetie shops when on holiday and buying tons of sweeties that I loved as a child.
Then spending the rest of my time hiding most of the stash from the kids!
alphabet sweeties, popping candy, irn bru bars, sasparilla sticks and aniseed balls etc......
Bring back cremola foam!

Todays major hunt was for mentos....I had the cheap diet coke.......but had to have a trip to Wick for the sweets!

Is Kraktoa foam not the same as creamola foam dadie ? Woody's in wick used to sell it.

Not quite the same...think all the E numbers have been removed that made it so disgustingly good!

Errm we are doing a cola rocket this afternoon.
Thats what the mentos are for!
Lauren got a tube thing to load the mentos in from the carboot sale and wants to set it off.

Is that a rhetorical question?

We have penny sweets and most of the old favourites such fangs, beer bottles, giant strawberrys, flying saucers, sherbet fountains and the like. We will always try to get stock in at customer's requests so please do ask if there is something you would like that we don't carry; if we can get it for you, we will. :D (We are Meiklejohns, Thurso Street, Wick)

I think you're right about the Krakatoa (creamola) foam Dadie. We had it in before Christmas but after the initial rush most people said they wouldn't take it again.

Lol, Mrs Sweetie, I think Bill needs to take a little time out from his day job in the interests of local research duties. ;)

I know you have some of the old favourites on sale, I've bought them on many occasions! Some members of my family dislike boxes of over-priced, pre-packaged chocolates & LOVE it when their pressies contain bits & pieces of their favourite, nostalgic "treat".

You're running a great business at Meiklejohn's in Thurso Street, Wick. Keep up the good work........
And go see if you can resource Spangles, Olde English Spangles & Fruit Spangles (with the soft centres) :D

I remember a time long ago when a sticky spangle or two use to hide in the corner of my cardigan pocket. First sook was to enable me to remove the accumulated detritus and fluff, then second sook was to enjoy the sweetie.

Moira, thank you for your lovely comments, they are very much appreciated. :)

Old English Spangles were my favourite too and if there's even a hint that they might be coming back, I will be on the case.

Oh yes, the black ones were my favourite followed by the red ones. They were always my favourite sweet and it was a sad day when they took them off the market!

C3..............:)
