I recently had an article I wrote picked up and posted here http://nationalcollective.com/2012/05/14/the-state-of-our-union/

I was delighted and thought some of you might want to read it. The response has been good so I hope you enjoy it

Well written, clear and setting out the matter in a way so that a reader can empathise with the thought and emotions behind the dilemma. It's a nice piece, balanced and intelligent. Would that all writing on this subject were so!

After having trouble connecting with your article until you sorted me out, I'm glad that I persevered!

A very down to earth piece expressing your point of view; much different than what we sometimes hear from the vehement protesters against Scotland's ability to govern themselves.

I'm not a political animal as I have difficulty with deciding who is telling it as it is, working out the reasons for some peoples' views e.g. those who would wish to blow up a certain statue not too far from Caithness and other idiotic dangerous ideas and those who don't think we can go stand alone.

Hopefully we will hear from the more educated, sensible nationalists who have the facts and figures at their fingertips.....

Again, thank you Squidge, much appreciated.

Very well done, cant tell you how much I cringe when I see the words 'auld enemy' in the papers, its just childish, doo doo stirring nonsense that should be buried.

To the point Squidge, nothing turns me off a politician more than cheap negativity. I'm married to a Lancashire lass who can produce the Lion and Albert and the Battle of Hastings with a little encouragement at parties!

My OH also wants Scottish Independence and he very much enjoyed your article. Very well written and also entertaining - in fact we printed it off so we could re-read it without having the computer on. Even though I am foriegn, I think Scottish Indepence would be right too as long as they treat this country as a whole and don't forget us up here north of Inverness.

Scotland is turning in on herself at such a rate of knots that everyone but the naive and disingenuous nationalists will have left the country by the time the referendum takes place.

We used to have anti-English nationalism. Now we have belly button contemplating Little Scotlander nationalism - where some fraction of the Little Scotlanders are English!

I'm not quite sure how you have concluded this from Squidge's OP.

Maybe you need to start your own thread?

Nicely written piece Squidge, but you still cannot convince me that Independence is the route for Scotland to go

Go read it again !!! As usual you have the wrong end of the stick and you do have trouble understanding that no one gives a fig about your views on Independence.

I'm very much a unionist, but without affiliation to any party. I'm sure you're all sick of hearing about that.

Regardless of any clash of political viewpoint, I have always enjoyed the quality of debate you offer on here and I am very impressed in the quality of that piece.

Enjoyable reading, Well done.

Something I do wonder though, would your self-certified "rabid" nationalist husband choose to vote SNP, and to follow all of their policies, if the other mainstream parties offered a referendum? Is his political affiliation based solely (or even mainly) on this one goal?

I do wonder, if (or when) independence was granted, would the SNP still be popular, or is their popularity based mainly around the desire for independence?

My wife is a floating voter or she was until I said I was leaving if we went independant. Now she's a rabid independantist! [lol]

BTW I still can't see the article, the page appears to download but nothing arrives.

John is a socialist at heart but Independence is his main aim. Its a funny thing isnt it. For example, its likely that those people who are natural Tory voters - or at least right of centre- will be better served under an independent Scotland. The political landscape will have to change and a right of centre party may very well emerge with none of the unelectable baggage that the conservatives carry here in Scotland. The SNP is made up of a whole raft of people who's common aim is an Independent Scotland but they may have little else in common. In addition there are a lot of people who would like indpendence but are not SNP voters. We may likely see a change in the structure of the paries after the referendum or after Independence if it comes. So would he vote SNP if the Labour Party offered a referendum hmmmm, I dont know. I dont think so at the moment as he sort of feels like I do that the Labour Party in Scotland hads completely lost its way and offers nothing coherent. Exciting times eh?

Thanks for reading though all of you, its good to get feedback. Maybe Ill do some more lol

Wow Squidge, I got really engrossed in that and was a wee bit disappointed when it ended. I wish it was full book as I am sure it could be made into one (and perhaps a film)?
You do have a fine talent if I may say so..
