Northern an example of "good practice"

The latest HMICS Report praises Northern Constabulary as an example of good practice.
Northern Constabulary achieved a 98.34% compliance in National Audit Test Results for information recording based on the Crime Audit in 2011 against a Scottish average of 95%.
The report also made recommendations designed to ensure that police staff working towards a single Scottish police force maintain a standard approach to crime recording throughout the transition period, highlighting that approaches to information recording by Dumfries and Galloway Police and Northern Constabulary should be considered as examples of good practice in terms of the quality of information recorded.
Deputy Chief Constable Andy Cowie welcomed the publication of the Report. He said:
"Northern Constabulary takes a very robust approach to crime recording and it is pleasing to see that our approach has been highlighted as good practice by HMICS.
"We introduced an improvement programme during 2011 establishing Divisional Crime Management units whose responsibilities include assuring the quality of incident updates. Also in an SCRS Pilot, divisional crime managers, with day-to-day responsibility for crime and incident recording, underwent a two-week training and mentoring programme to learn more about individual roles and responsibilities in order to ensure the highest quality and most effective and ethical approach to crime recording."
The Report also noted evidence of domestic abuse incidents being robustly investigated, as well as the active intervention of domestic abuse liaison officers and/or supervisory officers in providing incident updates. No recording errors were found in the Minor assaults incidents examined in Northern Constabulary.
Deputy Chief Constable Cowie continued: "It is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of staff that such excellent results have been achieved."
