Just seen a house in Murray Ave with all their decorations and tree lit up in the livingroom window. Are they the first this year?

I love Christmas decorations but have not seen any homes with theirs up yet. I don't usually put mine up until about 14th December - although when kids were younger they used to start asking for tree to go up at start of December.

I normally put my outdoor decorations up early cos it takes so long to put them up that I am not doing it to only have them on for 2 weeks, although I was lazy last year and didn't do them and I honestly got so much earache from people that I think they will be up this year, I just hate holding the ladder in the freezing cold for hours and it's worse taking them down in a freezing gale :)

Loads of people have got their decorations up here, as soon as the Halloween ones came down the Christmas ones went up. Lots of trees lit as well, which seems a little early but thet are so lovele to look at.

Our outdoor lights stay up all year round - pure laziness :D , and the fact that I can't stand heights so we'd have to get someone else to fix and remove them each year! When the time comes I just fit a time-switch to them so they go on and off at suitable times.

Our indoor ones will probably go up at the beginning of December if the kids get their way - as they usually do on this matter!

I left a set of lights up for 6 months once but never heard the end of it from the neighbours lol so now they come down on the 1st half decent day. Not so bad this year though as the last 2 sets of icicle lights have been broken in the wind and I refuse to buy any more of them and they are the worst to put up.

There is a house at the top of Henrietta Street that has had their decorations up since the start of November. Personally I think that the beginning of December is soon enough.

I would love to do the Christmas Decorations early, I just love Christmas.
We only need to think of the design to do on the window this year, not a clue of what to do yet.
We aint really into all the traditional metallic ceiling decorations, normally just tree and lights inside.
Doesnt take too long so we usually do this at the start of December (for the kids of course)!!

It's much too early for Christmas decorations - let the children wait and have something to look forward to. I loathe houses covered with lights, particularly flashing ones - good example of less is more and a tree with lights in a window on a dark night is much more attractive. While I'm at it (making myself totally unpopular) - it's an appalling waste of electricity at a time when we're supposed to be saving it as much as possible. Wonder how much contribution to global warming leading to mass starvation in the third world is caused by Christmas lights gone mad in the so-called developed ones.

Actually I think we'd all be much happier if we cut down on all this Christmas craziness - fewer lights and decorations, smaller presents, less wrapping, people just relaxing and enjoying each other's company with no worries about nightmare debt in the new year. Lovely.

Without wishing to sound like a 'grumpy ol' woman' I have to agree with you badger. There is just so much money spent over Christmas its unbelievable. I know it's kind of special if you have children, and they prob all know the story of the Nativity etc. But I do feel the real meaning of Christmas tends to get a bit forgotten along the way.

I totally agree with you Badger its nuts to put christmas decorations up now, To say its for the kids, i mean how mad is that, to teach your kids that christmas starts in November.
How many people actually celebrate christmas for what it really is?
Next they will be wanting easter in January[disgust]

I do also agree with badger about not too early.
But as for less pressies and wrapping etc....is it not for the people buying the pressies that have to worry about that. It is their bill and aint harming anyone else. Not everyone goes into the New Year with a big bill.
As for wrapping paper, if you are worried about the waste of this, has no-one heard of recycling anyway, again up to the person to waste their money on this.
True meaning of Christmas....A lot of people have probably lost interest in this with all the confusion of different religions and war etc.
If Jesus was brought down to earth for peace then why is their none!!
It is just another holiday let people enjoy it!!
For some people this is a good holiday to keep in touch with their families, who also may not be able to get time off work etc. the rest of the year.

If people were really spending money because they wanted to I suppose it would be OK but most of the time I'm sure it's because they are pressured into it. Children see adverts on tv for all kinds of expensive toys, some described as "only" £49 or worse which is actually a lot of money for many, and of course they ask for them. Then they want what their friends say they're getting. Everybody keeping up with everyone else. Why else would so many people get desperate about the debt they're into, even some still paying off last year's Christmas. It's mad and I know I'd rather spend less and sleep at night.
You can buy cheap wrapping paper and recycle it but how much is spent on the more expensive stuff, with fancy ribbons etc. all to be thrown away.
Money doesn't buy happiness and most children these days have far too many toys and would be quite content with a few simple ones if they were allowed to be.

I definately agree with that badger....our kids definately do NOT get all the latest mod cons. If they see an advert, yes they do say 'I'm getting that' but it is down to the parents to make the little pressies more exciting, not just the normal pants, socks, etc.

I think it is more the people doing the blinding light decorations that waste their money, not the parents who love their kids. They grow up too fast and I love seeing their faces on Christmas Morning!

Well said bobsgirl, I for one will be pulling out all the stops for birthdays and christmases when we get a child, they grow up far to fast and the look on thie faces is worth it all.

Well I will continue to do the blinding light decorations and spend my well earned cash doing so and watching all the childrens faces light up when they see them and adding a touch of magic to their festive season.

I hope you continue with the christmas lights - my little girls absolutely love the displays - they get so excited and it is a treat as it is just once a year!

Also, I agree totally regarding too many presents. My children only get presents at christmas and birthday and I have also said to our relations that I don't want them to get anything unless it is a special occasion. I remember when I was little the excitement around getting the presents because it only happened twice a year!

I have to admit I love to take the kids around in the car to see all the outdoor decorations many people put up. I havent put any decorations up outside the house as yet but maybe this year I will (not my house but hey who cares).

I feel its up to each individual whether they wish to spend their money on lights ,gifts and food at this time of year and how much to spend, we are all our own best judges in what we can and cannot afford to do.:)

My kids have all been told one main present each this year and a couple of little ones and so long as its something that I know they will like I am sure they will love it.

I also think its what we all do as a family to celebrate christmas that gives us the lasting memories not the presents we open.I remember the ritual of watching the Wizard of Ozz at christmas eating sweats more than anything else when I was little.

I was at a garden centre yesterday and was interested to hear a child saying to her mother that she thought it was unreasonable that shops were allowed to start selling Christmas goods so early and that it ruined the spirit of Christmas. I quite agree - its getting worse every year, just for commercialism and the big £. They shouldn't be allowed to start until Dec. 1st.

The Christmas Pageant is the 2nd sat in November (1st this year because of rememberence say) Santa has arrived and is in the Magic Cave and now the displays go up! Luv going for a drive on a warm summers night to see them and we finish at the brewery lights for an icecream. Great to watch the kids especially the young ons and the wonder ontheir faces regards robyn in Adelaide in South Australia

It's also special with our grandchildren and great grandchildren. They help to carry on the true meaning of Christmas.

I love Chistmas lights. I have bought some and put them up for the first time this year. I usually don't bother with the tree and decorations inside as we are always away. But I love my pretty lights and plan to add more when
Dave isn't looking.
PS, It is blisteringly hot over here and putting up the lights on my own (re: Dave refuses to help as he doesn't like them) had produced a lot of sweat, muttered swear words and a black thumb from hammer! Don't care! I still love em.
