We have had a Short eared Owl hereabouts for quite a while now.

It's most active late afternoon and early evening.

Saw the owl again this evening but am informed by my hubby that it is a short eared owl NOT a barn owl. Oh dear showing my ignorance yet again.

An easy mistake to make gingernut. A Barn Owl will usually be lighter in colour and have a pale 'ruff' around its face and neck. I believed Barn Owls didn't venture this far north until I saw one just over two years ago.

Gronnuck I love your photo! It's a great shot with the evening sun highlighting the wings.

We have noticed a small, pale owl on fence posts these last few evenings, about 11 at night, just outside Wick. It's been too dark to say with any certainty what type it is and it has flown away as we drove past.

There used to be tawny owls in the woodland at the top of Newton Hill but I've not noticed them for quite a while.
