Accused could have caused injury or death

A DANGEROUS driver who “could have caused injury or death to perfectly innocent people”, escaped a prison sentence at Wick Sheriff Court today.
It was feared at one point, that Jack Bamber, who overtook vehicles blind and ended up becoming airbourne, might not have survived the crash.
Bamber, of Soircha Cottages, Gillock, previously admitted a charge of dangerous driving. Sheriff Andrew Berry said that he was just persuaded not to send the accused to prison and ordered him to carry out 300 hours unpaid community work. The accused was also banned from driving for four-and-a-half years.
The accident happened on the A9 near Mybster, in June, last year. Senior fiscal depute, David Barclay said it was evident that Bamber (22) did not have a clear view of the road ahead when he began his overtaking manoeuvre, in a line of traffic. The driver of the oncoming vehicle slammed on his brakes in an attempt to pull into his nearside. Bamber struck the vehicle he was attempting to overtake and the combined impact of the three vehicles had the effect of the accused leaving the road and literally becoming airbourne and going over a drystone dyke before landing in a field.
Solicitor George Mathers said that Bamber had sustained multiple injuries and when admitted to hospital was initially treated as “a potential fatality”. He had been in intensive care for some time after the accident, and still suffered flashbacks. The solicitor conceded that the accused’s previous record for road traffic offences put him in a difficult position but appealed for a non-custodial sentence.
Sheriff Andrew Berry said that Bamber had “come very close” to going to prison. In addition to his community service, the accused will have to pass an advance driving test, at the end of his disqualification.
