Thousands of families in the Highlands will be worse off
AN estimated 7,700 families in the Highlands and Islands will no longer be entitled to tax credits following the introduction of changes to tax credits in 2012/13, according to new Government figures.
Number of families that will no longer be entitled to tax credits following the introduction of changes to Tax Credits in April 2013. ( in 2012/13) by local authority is shown below.

Highland 3,600

Argyll and Bute 1,200

Orkney 300

Shetland 400

Moray 1,700

Western Isles 500

Commenting on the figures, Rhoda Grant MSP said : “Raising a family is already financially difficult for very many people, and it will get a lot worse for thousands of families in the Highlands when these new cuts are introduced and Household budgets will be subjected to further strain.”
She warned: “Families on modest and middle incomes could lose all their child tax credit that would be worth around £545 a year. With one hand Chancellor George Osborne takes these credits away from hard-working families, and with the other he gives millionaires a tax cut.”
