Man walked straight past checkout with bottle

VODKA featured in two theft cases in court at Wick today.
The first accused, Stephen Cumming, admitted stealing a bottle of the spirit from the Co-op in Meadow Lane, Thurso.
Cumming appeared from custody at the Justice of the Peace Court. The 52-year-old was spotted by staff monitoring CCTV, on January 23, picking up a bottle and slipping it into his jacket. Staff members shadowed the accused who walked straight past a checkout. When they called after him, he ran out of the store.
Acting fiscal, Fiona Banks, added that Cumming, of Flat 29, Ormlie Road Apartments, Thurso, was subsequently arrested on a warrant and spent last night in the cells.
Solicitor Sylvia MacLennan said that Cumming, who has a number of previous convicitons, had been suffering from depression at the time and the theft had been very much “a, silly, spur of the moment act”.
The accused who also admitted a number of previous convictions, was fined £50.
EARLIER, another Thurso man was remanded at Wick Sheriff Court, pending his reappearance for a trial on a charge of stealing stealing a bottle of vodka from the same store.
Francis McPhee (22) appeared from custody at Wick Sheriff Court and pleaded not guilty
The charge alleges that he stole a bottle of vodka from the Coop’s Meadow Lane store, in Thurso, yesterday. McPhee, of MacPherson Walk, Thurso, had his trial date fixed for May 10.
