Cash could fund Thurso bypass says council planner

A ROW broke out after a Highland Council official suggested it seek cash from the nuclear industry- in return for allowing trainloads of toxic fuel to pass through the region, according to today’s Press and Journal.
Senior planner, David Mudie, will today ask councillors to approve his response to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, which wants to transport radioactive material to Sellafield in Cumbria. He believes the best option is to take the material by train and suggested the council could approach the NDA for money towards funding a bypass for Thurso.
However, anti-nuclear protester, Tor Justad, of Strathpeffer, last night urged councillors to ignore “pay-off” considerations and focus on the potential hazard of taking 44 tonnes of unirradiated plutonium and highly-enriched uranium the length of Scotland.
