Henson Scottish Cup 2012 draw takes place

The draw for the preliminary and first round of the Henson Scottish Cup 2012 took place at Hampden yesterday. The draw was made by Frank Bannigan from PSL Team Sports who kindly donated a voucher for £1000 of kit, in addition to a set of goalkeeper gloves for each month of the coming 2012 season, as prizes that could be won by clubs who sent representatives along to yesterday’s draw.
Maureen McGonigle, Executive Administrator of SWF, said ‘Today’s draw was a great success working in partnership with PSL Team Sports. I was delighted to see a good turn out from Scottish Women’s Football clubs and I am very much looking forward to the first matches of this year’s competition on Sunday 25th March’.
The preliminary round sees long journeys for Glasgow City Reserves as they travel north to face Buchan Youth, Stranraer as they head to Perth to take on Jeanfield Swifts, and Turriff United as they travel south from the Highlands for their tie with Falkirk FC. Clubs with much shorter journeys include Edinburgh’s Spartan Reserves who were drawn against Musselburgh Windsor and Dee Ladies who will travel a short distance along the A90 for their tie with Forfar Farmington.
The 1st round of the Henson Scottish Cup also sees several clubs facing a long trip for their ties. Caithness Ladies, a club only formed in 2010, face a very tough tie away to Hibs Reserves, while Aberdeenshire’s Luthermuir WFC must travel to Renfrewshire to meet Paisley Saints Ladies. Queen’s Park and Glasgow Girls will head in the opposite direction to take on Moray and Stonehaven respectively.
Stephen Bole, Secretary of Airdrie United, said of his club’s preliminary round away tie to FC Edinburgh that ‘the opposition are a bit of an unknown quantity with their being a new club, so we’re looking forward to finding out what they are like’. Of a potential trip to Dumfries if they manage to progress to the 1st round, Stephen added ‘Dumfries were in the first division alongside us last season, so we know them well. We are looking forward to meeting them again if we get through the preliminary round’.
Alison Mackie, representing newly-formed Falkirk Ladies F.C Reserves, said of her club’s home tie against Raith Rovers in the 1st round, ‘We are very happy with the draw, though it will certainly be a tough game as Raith Rovers are a 1st Division club’.
