View Full Version : Kumliens and Iceland.
It seems like it's a good year for seeing Kumliens Gulls, they're turning up all over, here's a shot of one taken at Scrabster along with an Iceland Gull.

Is this an Icelandic Gull, had pink feet and bill, about the same size as a full grown Herring Gull, it was scavenging a corpse on Sandside beach yesterday,

Hi LIZZ
It's a Glaucous Gull 2nd Winter immature.
Many thanks nirofo, I knew it was some thing different but my bird book was not helping!
Why can't gulls have their species tattooed on them, would make life alot easier.
Spotted 3 Glaucous Gulls at Thurso harbour today and 1 at Scrabster yesterday.
Still a few Glaucous and Iceland gulls at Scrabster, here's a few recent photos.

Hi LIZZ
This is also a Glaucous Gull 2nd Winter immature, they come in all shapes and sizes, some same size as a Herring Gull, some as big as a Great Black-backed Gull. The beak is different in Iceland Gull 2nd Winter birds, have a look at these 2 head shots for comparison.

Hi. Another of the key identification features to seperate Iceland from Glaucous Gulls is the length that the primary flight feathers extend beyond the tip of the tail - they are clearly longer than the length of the beak in Iceland (and Kumlien's) Gulls, and vice versa in Glaucous. I have seen at least 3 Iceland Gulls at once on the boating lake in Thurso park in recent weeks. Beautiful birds. shame that no passer-by even notices them. Great photos, by the way!
