Just read in the groat that there is a proposal to make Ackergil Street one way. VERY good idea I think. BUT there are problems. The school bus would have to park on the opposite side of the road posing a danger to the children. Alternatives put forward by the councilors - Remove the wall at the bottom of Ackergil Street (the owner of the house is not happy about that)
Make it one way in the other direction (how on earth is that going to change things? It's the traffic coming out that causes the problem)
Narrow Henrietta street at the point (eh?)

Now I'm going to put forward a few suggestions of my own.
Firstly the kids should be safe enough if they cross at the lollypop, however, to make things even safer, the bus could either park at the other school gate in Leith Walk, or it could park in the car park behind the school. The area next to the wall could be for buses only. they have such an area at Hillhead school.
The above would be cheaper and more sensible than what they are suggesting.

Parking at the school gates in Girnigoe street would be a nightmare for the bus driver, trying to get your car around Leith walk is bad enough.
The car park at the north school is far too small the buses they would need to reverse into the car park as it's way too small to turn.
The school bus children are all escorted out to the bus by a teacher, then it would be up to the lollipop lady to safely take them across the road.

The greater danger for children attending North School is crossing Henrietta Street. This is a fast road at the 2 points where most children south of Henrietta Street cross i.e. the crossroads with Girnigoe Street and Coach Road. At least there is a lollipop lady who does an excellent job in Ackergill Street. There is no such provision in Henrietta Street.

That's true, also at the junction at the bottom of Ackergill street the pavements are so narrow, i've seen kids standing there waiting to cross and some cars mound the pavement.
School Signs should be put up at the junction at Girnigoe st and Ackergill st warning drivers coming along Henrietta st.

We`ve been saying that for years, Ackergill Street should be 1 way street OR the cooncil should make a compulsory purchase order on the wall on the corner house.
How nobody has been killed or maybe they have? Im very surprised as its a bad corner & 9/10 times theres a car parked right beside the corner in Henrietta street, so that you have to crawl out the junction & hope there`s nothing coming. Not ideal though eh?

I have to say that it's been a long time coming. My dad had been campaigning for this right up until he passed away. Can I just say though that the one way proposal along with a combined 20 mph speed limit around the area of the North School would make things much safer in my opinion. The number of near misses that I have witnessed is incredible. From memory the school buses used to set down in Girningoe Street. Its only in recent years they have started to set down in Ackergill Street.
As for road safety for kids, does anybody know if the kids are shown it in school. As an aside down here in Oxfordshire the year 6's, thats the equivalent of Primary 7, attend IMPs. Thats Injury Minimisation Programme for Schools. They are taught basic first aid and given general safety advice. Also they do a Junior Citizenship course which involves Trading Standards, the Police, Fire Service and several other agencies. For one afternoon out of school time it's well worth it as the skills they are taught could make a difference.

making ackergill st one way has to double the traffic along hill avenue.
boy racers are already using hill ave as a sprint circuit . during the day or night it is unsafe to let kids out in this road ,how there has,nt been an accident there i dont know but sad,ly it will happen sooner than later.

It's not the only street to have this problem. Speed bumps might be the answer.
