Driver will lose his licence and possibly his car

A KEISS man will discover tomorrow whether he will lose his car under a new measure aimed at turning the screw of drinks-driving.
Ian Campbell (51) was arrested following an accident at the Cliff Road roundabout, in Wick, on Thursday afternoon. Tests revealed he had a breath-alcohol level of 117 microgrammes, more than three times the 35mgs limit.
He appeared in court, from custody on Friday and admitted driving with excess alcohol and carelessly. Pleas of not guilty to failing to stop at the scene and report the accident, were accepted by senior fiscal depute, David Barclay.
Mr Barclay gave notice that he intends to move for forfeiture of Campbell’s high-performance Quattro car, which crashed into another vehicle driven by an 81-year-old pensioner, at the roundabou - when the accused returns to court for sentence.
Previously, only repeat drink-drive offenders risked forfeiture of their cars, but under new powers to coincide with this year’s festive campaign, anyone at the wheel more than three times over the limit, can lose their vehicle.
Campbell, of Greenbraes, Keiss, was made subject to an interim disqualification, pending his appearance tomorrow before Sheriff Andrew Berry at the first court of the New Year.
