Saw a Red Kite yesterday, think it was near Alness, didnt think there were any in Scotland or not common

You can see them regularly between Tain and Inverness, there's a Red Kite watching and feeding station near to Dingwall, their web page is at this address. http://www.eyestotheskies.org.uk/seeredkites/

Depends on how they're flying at the time, yes, the normal way you expect to see them is with the fork in the tail showing well, but they use the tail in various ways to control their flight.
