Lucky escape after overtaking manoeuvre went wrong

THE court at Wick heard of Michael Finlayson’s lucky escape after an overtaking manoeuvre went wrong.
He lost control of his car which crashed, and ended up on its roof on the A9.
Finlayson, of Geise Houses, Thurso, admitted a charge of careless driving and was fined £300.
It was stated that the accident, on September 2, south of Dunbeath, occurred, after he pulled out to overtake a tanker but returned too sharply, to his own side, after realising he would not be able to complete his manoeuvre.
Solicitor Sylvia MacLennan said that Finlayson (52) had an unblemished driving record involving different types of vehicles, and described it as ‘exemplary’.
She added : “He simply misjudged the procedure.”
The accused, who works for a gas company, incurred five penalty points in addition to the fine.

Used red diesel for car

A CHECK on the fuel Alistair McPhee was using in his car, resulted in him facing a criminal charge, for it wasn’t petrol but red diesel.
McPhee (46) of Shelligoe Road, Lybster, admitted the offence and was fined £150. When seen by the police he commented: “It was just a drop to get me into Thurso.”
Solicitor Miss MacLennan stressed that consequently, there was a very small amount involved and indicated the offence, on November 25, was a one-off.

Fine for one punch accused

TROUBLE flared after patrons left a Thurso nightclub. Teenager Danny Marr claimed that Andrew Carlisle had been causing trouble, earlier in the evening and punched him.
Senior fiscal depute, David Barclay said that had the parties not been drinking, the incident would not have happened..
Marr (18) of Bayview Terrace, Thurso, admitted the assault at The Spacey, in Thurso’s Beach Road, on July 31 and was given a six months good behaviour trial.

Cannabis cost accused £140

Alexander MacAlpine was fined that amount when he admitted being in possession of a gram of cannabis at his home.
MacAlpine (22) of Cairndhuna Terrace, Wick, admitted the offence which occurred on October 31.

Denies assault and causing damage

A THRUMSTER woman is denying charges of assault and causing damage.
Islay Macleod, of Thrumster House, Thrumster Estate, had her trial fixed for March 20.
The charges allege that 60-year-old Macleod assaulted George Rodenhurst at Bruan Park, on October 11 and wilfully and recklessly cut an electric fence.

Mobile music

DRIVER Andrew Newlands was listening to music on his mobile phone when he was spotted by police in South Road, Wick on July 19.
He admitted the driving offence and a number of previous convictions and was fined £100.
Newlands (28) of North Murchison Street, Wick, also incurred three penalty points.
