Driver's lucky escape after losing control

A COURT heard of teenage driver Garry Mann’s lucky escape after he hit a patch of water at speed.
His car was pulled to the left, on the outskirts of Thurso, and he lost control of the vehicle when he over-corrected, Wick Justice of the Peace Court heard yesterday. (Tuesday)
The car then veered over onto its wrong side and went on to hit a road sign, a hedge, then a cemetery wall, after which the vehicle bounced back, ending up on its roof, a write-off.
Procurator fiscal, Alasdair MacDonald, said that Mann was thrown over the wall and added: “He was very fortunate but might not be so lucky another time.”
Solicitor Eilidh Macdonald agreed and told the court: “He was extremely lucky to have emerged from this accident with minor injuries.” She added however, that the 18-year-old spent some time in hospital and was off work for four weeks, following the accident, on September 16.
Miss Macdonald said that Mann, of Quarry View, Weydale, who admitted a charge of careless driving and had lost his job as a direct consequence of what she described as “this foolish piece of driving”, from which he had emerged “physically unscathed”.
Mann, who was said to have personally repaired the damage to the hedge, and the wall, was fined £280 and incurred six penalty points.
In a separate case of careless driving, Stephen Clark (20) failed to adequately ensure that there was no traffic approaching from behind him, before moving off from a friend’s house in Scrabster, and collided with an articulated lorry.
Clark, of 16 Morven Place, Thurso, admitted the offence, which occurred on March 4, and was fined £240 and disqualified for 50 days. The Justices were told that the lorry driver reacted quickly and pulled his vehicle toward the side of the A9 Scrabster road but was unable to avoid a collision with Clark’s car or hitting a stone wall and two road signs.
Fiscal Alasdair Macdonald commented: “It was extremely fortunate that no-one sustained any injury.
Solicitor Neil Wilson said the accident had been “a momentary lapse on concentration” on the Clark’s part. Mr Wilson added that the accused had checked his mirror when he got into his car but failed to do, again, before he moved off.

Fined for possession

POLICE, who searched Kevin Watt found 10 diazepam tablets and just under a gram of cannabis resin, Wick Justice of the Peace Court was told yesterday.(Tuesday)
Watt (27) unemployed, of Henderson Street, Thurso, admitted the offence, which occurred in the town’s Princes Street, on October 1, and a number of previous convictions. He was fined £200.
The drugs which had a street value of £10 were for his own use, it was stated.

AT THE SHERIFF COURT

A SHERIFF has called for reports on a Thurso man who resisted arrest after drunken behaviour at a local pub.
The accused, John Holmes (27) was said to have been “very drunk” when he was making a nuisance of himself at the Newmarket Bar in Thurso, on October 7.
He struggled violently with the police, and attempted to escape, and it took them a while before they were able to handcuff him and bring him under control, Wick Sheriff Court was told today. At the police station, Holmes made a threat to officers relating to the Newmarket barman.
Sheriff Andrew Berry said that reports were required, as the accused was currently on probation and warned him about the consequences of not co-operating with social workers and stepping out of line, in the meantime.
Holmes, of 96 Marr Terrace, Thurso, pleaded guilty after appearing from custody. Sentence was deferred until December 22.

Man was kicked repeatedly

A CONFRONTATION between two men ended with one of them being knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked.
The accused, Evan Sinclair, of The Old Manse, Main Street, Keiss, admitted the assault which occurred at The Shore, Wick on November 22, on Sunday. The victim, Andrew Mackay required medical attention for a three cm cut to his scalp.
The incident followed verbal exchanges between them, it was stated. Sinclair (36) who appeared from custody, was ordered to carry out 66 hours under a level one, community paid back order.
