I have just heard that the fire engine is out at gillock assisting with draining water as some of the houses are at risk of getting flooded! The police have also closed the road. The price we pay for a good summer, huh?

The flooding is pretty bad around the county. I was through in Wick today and the roads are very dangerous with water lying quite deep in places. What is the point of ditches if there isn't provision for the water to drain off the roads into them?
Something I saw which I found quite distressing was the flooding in Wick cemetery - quite extensive in the newer section where my dear mum’s grave is – it was all under water.

Beginning to feel like Piglet - surrounded by water. It's rising ..... Like many, my old house has boards on bare earth. I keep expecting to wake up one morning floating round the bedroom - good thing bed has long legs. Met a hedgehog just now looking a bit lost, wonder if he's been washed out. Worms are looking very clean.

After reading all these posts and seeing a lot of water on the roads this afternoon, I was surprised there was not a flood watch issued, as we had one issued most days last week.

Or are these watches and warnings just for the rivers?

I hope everyone dries out, I am sure a few people would have been splashed by cars today. Its funny to see but not when it happens to you.

I've always wanted a water feature in the garden but with the deluges we've had over the last few days, the garden is the water feature .Was lapping at the back door on more than one occasion, even the cat puts on his water wings before heading out.

The fire engine was pumping out water near the wick football field causing traffic congestion and the roads at Keiss were badly flooded but not bad at John O Groats. the river at wester was in the fields, very bad flooding there. the roads are so bad because they took away the drainage and filled in the ditches.

JAWS

Certainly when it comes to the roads outside of the Towns I can't remember when I last saw any of the channels between the roads and ditches which looked like it had been cleared.

In some places, even with light rain, there is standing water, never mind when there's a down-pour. Usually a small bank has grown between the road and the ditch at the side. It doesn't take any specialist knowledge to work out that digging a channel through the bank from the road to the ditch would solve the problem.

This would not involve any major roadworks or any massive expense. A mini-digger or even a couple of men with shovels would solve the problem. The attitude seems to be that it is easier to dump a few "Flood" signs about the county rather than solve the problem in the first place.

I appreciate that towns are a little more difficult because the drains tend to be buried underground.
That being said, if the same places are the ones subjected to flooding then, even there, it is a problem that needs solving.

Just ignoring what is happening and hoping it won't happen again is not an acceptable solution.

Ann
24-Oct-06, 08:33
Jaws, when I was young (yes, I've got a great memory!) there were gangs of men who went round the countryside digging the channels from the roads to the ditches to keep them flowing freely. I have seen it being done more recently with a machine but obviously it is not enough.

Having said that, if flooding is really bad I suppose the water reaches a certain level and there is nowhere else for it to go. Expecially when it rains as hard as it has been this last day or so.

So, hands up all those who want to lose weight; let's form a team and go out drain digging! Who could ask for more? Excercise, fresh air, good craic with your mates, picnics in the open air AND waterless roads!

And before anybody says it, follow me, I'm right behind you!

henry20
24-Oct-06, 08:44
Part of the problem has to be the fact that many ditches now have drainage pip in them instead of being a 'good old ditch'. With a ditch that has drainage pipe, topped with stones, they only have certain inlets, so unless the water is very clever and finds its way to the 'nearest emergency exit' then it is bound to cause a backlog of water. While I think there would still be a problem with flooding with un-filled ditches, at least they would have been filled to capacity before any houses were at risk of flooding.

Obviously, this only applies to the country, but with the corner at olrig street/traill street being knee high in water - for the second time in a relatively short space of time, its about time something was done about it.

Wonder if the flooding of the cemetary has anything to do with the drainage at the proposed development of MM Miller. If so you can bet there will be a repeat. The road looked very scarey, like a deep river, and highly distressing to people who have loved ones in the cemetary.

Noah went to see God to ask him for a new and improved 'ark'.
"Ok Noah. I think it is time you had a new ark", God said. "Take a seat, tell me your ideas, and I'll start a design".
"Well, firstly, I'd like it to have plenty of floors. Say, 5 or 6", Noah said.
"Ok... 5 or 6 floors" "I'd also like some spaces on the floors as well, to keep things in."
"Right, spaces." And with this God starts drawing a few designs for Noah. "Would you like some animals in there to start you off?" God asked him.
"Erm... Fish!" Noah replied. "Fish. Ok. What sort? Any in particular?"
"Carp, and plenty of them", Noah said. "Carp. Anything else needed?" God asked.
And they went through various items such as the colour, doors, windows, etc.
Finally, between them both they'd come up with a design that they both agreed on.
Sitting back in his chair admiring the new 'ark', God asked Noah,
"So, what are you going to call it? Have you thought of anything?"
"Well God. I thought I'd call it 'Noah's Multi-Story Carp Ark'

Now, now, Ann. Next you'll be telling us you remember when the little men went round the streets and swept the rubbish from the gutters so the grids didn't get blocked and the Council Wagon went round and cleared the build-up of muck that had gathered in the sumps to stop it getting into the drains and blocking them.

I suppose we have developed a new up-to-date modern method. Wait until the floods regularly get deeper then three inches, then dig up everything in site to clear the problem which was easily preventable in the first place.

Such quaint, old fashioned ideas, fancy still believing that "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure". It's far more exciting watching people try to cope with a disaster.

Just to keep anybody who has not yet been out up to date, forget the Wellies, try waders, leave the car and try a boat.

The road is awash all over the place and I've seen a whole new set of burns and rivers where there were none before. I have no doubt that the rest of the County is as bad if not worse so take it easy if you go out.

Yes, Sweetpea, its possible - especially on an older car/battery, but the heat of engine should dry it out so that you can complete your journey.

Any trips unless an absolute must, should be avoided IMO - just not worth the risk!

I've got to go from Thurso to Wick just now. Can the water get up into your car form underneath and make it conk out? sorry if that seems like a silly questionNot daft at all. If your car uses petrol then if water splashes into the engine compartment it can cause temporary problems with the electrics causing the engine to stop.
It will start again eventually after the electrics have dried out.

It ain't any fun if it's pouring down, you're stoped in 6 inches of water and you have to get out. If you drive slowly so you don't throw water all over the place you shouldn't have a problem.

Guess who found out the hard way in the first place.

Hi Sweetpea, go careful going from Thurso to Wick, the road is closed at Haster, the water is pouring down the hill like a river across the road at the little T junction and into the the house (think it's the Smithy??) across the road. Those poor people, they have sandbags piled halfway up their front doors and their yard is like a lake! They are diverting off the A882 there and up the minor road (don't know what it's called, sorry) and round and down past us in Milton. it's ok this end, but there's water for about a mile up the hill from Haster. We have loads of water in the field behind us which is draining though a hole in our wall, into our garden (which luckily is all concrete, so is washing straight down to the drains, or down the drive.)

This may seem like a niave question (bear with me i've only been here 3 weeks!!), but does flooding like this often happen??

Don't Panic Laura!!! Its not usually this bad - I've seen some rain in my time (I'm only 26!) but its never been this bad - even when Thurso river flooded last year, the rest of the area wasn't flooded as bad as this.

On a sad note, I heard a farmer in Watten lost 40 of his sheep as they were swept away by the river! :(

no this kind of flooding is exceptionally unusual in my opinion.

But is it??? Is this the new 'normal' for this time of year??
I remember people saying the same thing when the Safeway carpark flooded a couple of years ago!
Is this just another symptom of climate change??
If it is, then all the roads and rail lines need to be completely updated, and from what I understand, changing the rails up here is next to impossible due to the soft ground underneath certain sections!(which cause the trains to stay to a rigid speed limit, which makes it faster to travel by road....which is just daft!)
Just hope that like you said, this is VERY unusual!:confused

Just been out to Scrabster on a job. There is a waterfall from Holborn Head down to the back of the houses - I understand this is where the landslide is. The harbour is brown with the mud!!!

There is approx. 6" of flooding along sections of the Burnside road and up to 9" at the Business Park. The crossroads at Hill of Forss and the back road to Scrabster are deluged and it looks like that whole back road will only be passable by a higher-set vehicle.

If anyone from Dounreay is looking in then I would recommend posting a notice on the Intranet warning drivers to take it gently where there are dips or lower points in the road because it looks like there's going to be a LOT of water at numerous points.

This is a warning from the police taken from the www.hi-way.org (http://www.hi-way.org) site 26th Oct 2006:-

"NORTHERN CONSTABULARY
IT has come to the attention of Police that motorists have been using the A897 Helmsdale to Melvich road and the unclassified Glen Loth road, both of which are closed.
A number of vehicles are now stranded in that area and Police are warning drivers not to use these roads under any circumstances until advised.
These roads are CLOSED and it is imperative people do not use them.
There is limited or no mobile phone reception in these areas therefore motorists who do not heed this warning will become isolated with no communication possible.
In addition Police have information that motorists on the A9 at Portgower are driving through the road closed signs, therefore putting themselves and emergency services in danger.
We stress that drivers should take heed of road closed sign and remember that they are in place for their own safety.
Police and other emergency services, including all agencies involved in this incident, have to stress that this is an ongoing situation with more extreme weather predicted during the course of this afternoon and this evening which will affect a number of areas north of Inverness, Caithness and Sutherland and into the Orkney Islands.
Police are also advising motorists not to make any unnecessary journeys at this time."

It is getting dangerous to go for any distance at all if you don't know the up to date conditions. Anyone attemptiing to make an unnessary journey should stay put. The emergency services have enough to do without people going out to see the floods for themselves.

Henry20 just came in and told me that the footbridge over Thurso river is out of use now. The water is well high. She's off a drive around town to see all the wonderful sights :D

I took a couple of pictures of the flooding at Somerfield. It doesn't look that bad from the pictures, but one of the kids pushed a shopping trolley down into the water and it almost dissapeared!

Interesting timing for the news headline on the main page I'll be a sea cadet but not today and if I get a free boat.
The house is surrounded by water I feel almost medieval accept the draw bridge may be under water too, oh no hold on the trampoline has just blown round the corner that will do nicely!

Agree with you on the rain, never seen anything close.

That is very sad concerning the sheep, poor creatures. :~(

Guess who's glad he went shopping this morning.

I had the day off today. Gutted about missing all the excitement. I didn't actually believe it when my mum came home and told me the place was flooded. So I went down to see for myself, and sure enough, they've got sandbags at the doors and the trolleys are floating around the carpark.

Please put some of this rain in a wee parcel and send it to California. We could use it.
