Outstanding detection across all classes of crime

Northern Constabulary reveals an outstanding detection rate of 64.7% across class 1 to 5 crimes, and 84.2% across all classes of crime, in its latest performance report to the Northern Joint Police Board.
The latest crime statistics for the period April to September 2011, reveal that while some crimes have increased in East Division, the overall number of crimes have substantially decreased across the North and Central Divisions.
East Division shows an increase of 13% in reported crimes, which is largely down to an increase in class 4,5 and 6) crimes which include vandalisms, breach of the peace and offences such as possession of drugs. However, detection rates in East Division are standing at 67.3% (across class 1-5), almost 10% up on the previous year.
Serious crimes have significantly reduced in North Division (Caithness and Sutherland and the North Isles) as have dishonesties bringing the overall crime rate down by 17.8% for the period.
Central Division shows a 5.8% reduction in reported crimes with fewer dishonesties and vandalisms.
There were a total of 20,383 crimes across the Force during this period, comparing with 21,437 in the same period in 2010.
Chief Constable George Graham said: "A detection rate of 64.7% across class 1-5 crimes is excellent by any standards and remains one of the highest detection rates in the UK. This is higher even than last year's high detection rate of 61%. The report demonstrates that Northern Constabulary continues to drive up standards and strives to give the best possible policing service."
He added: "These are challenging times for the Force and it is a credit to the hard work and dedication of police officers and police staff that they have delivered such excellent results."
