Council welcomes £100 million of new funding

HIGHLAND COUNCIL has welcomed today's announcement by the UK Government of £100 million of additional funding for the Scottish renewable energy, including marine renewables.
Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, and Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, were in Nigg, East Ross, announced that an agreement between the UK and Scottish Governments will enable the Scottish Government to access and spend half of the Scottish Fossil Fuel Levy Fund.
Council Leader Michael Foxley said: "This is excellent news announced on our doorstep at Nigg. We will want to meet with the Scottish Government and highlight the importance to the Highland economy of some of these funds being channelled into the three national infrastructure renewables plan sites in Highland, namely Nigg, Ardersier and Kishorn . This will assist the refurbishment of the sites; maximise their potential and boost the local economies."
Councillor Ian Ross, Chairman of the Council's Planning and Development Committee, said: "The Council has campaigned for the Fossil Fuel levy funds to be returned to Scotland and invested in the development of the offshore renewables industry. This is very welcome news for the Highlands and Scotland, it builds on the recent announcement of the successful acquisition and launch of the Nigg Energy Park – this should make available significant additional resources to support the development of this key economic sector for our area.”
