Accused who hit woman is tagged

A THURSO man’s social life will be curtailed after a sheriff imposed a tagging order on him for an assault in the town.
Sheriff Andrew Berry impressed on John Gunn that the 7pm-7am curfew was a direct alternative to prison and warned him that if there were any problems, the accused would be back in court facing a custodial sentence.
Seventy-one-year-old Gunn, of Morven Place, Thurso, admitted hitting a woman in the face at her home in the town, on April 14.
Solicitor Neil Wilson said that Gunn had had a drink problem for a considerable time but recent health difficulties had prompted him to make changes in his lifestyle and if he cut down on his drinking, he would hopefully stay out of trouble.
Sheriff Berry said that Gunn had been a regular offender in recent times and went on: “You don’t seem to grasp that you are not entitled to behave as you please.”
Gunn’s tag will run for a period of six months.

Community service for man's threatening behaviour

Campbell Freeman, who behaved in a disorderly manner in Thurso’s Victoria Walk, was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid community service.
Freeman (47) of Ormlie Lodge, Thurso, admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner towards the police, earlier in the week, and several previous convictions. He was said to have adopted an aggressive stance and challenged a constable to fight, when officers approached him in connection with an unrelated matter.
The court was told that Freeman had consulted a GP, since the offence, and was taking medication which would prevent him taking alcohol.
Sheriff Berry was told that the accused stayed out of trouble when he was in work.
