Teenager is remanded
after knife offence plea

A THURSO teenager, armed with a knife, was prevented by a
quick-thinking bystander from getting involved in a street melee with
two groups, fencing each other like something out of a three musketeers
rapier fight.
The comparison was drawn by senior fiscal depute, David Barclay, when
he outlined the circumstances which had landed Dominic Long in the dock.
Long, of 38 Holborn Avenue, Thurso, appeared from custody and admitted
having a kitchen knife in his possession, in public, without reasonable
excuse or authority.
Wick Sheriff Court heard yesterday (Wednesday) of the confrontation
that took place in Holborn Avenue, on Monday, watched by members of the
public. Mr Barclay said that a variety of items were being used,
including a ladder, a crutch and a bedpost , in what he described as a
‘fencing’ manner, he compared to the three musketeers.
While this was taking place, 16-year-old Long was observed, by a
bystander, leaving his house holding a black-handled kitchen knife.
Mr Barclay said: “Another witness, immediately went and took the knife
from Long.”
Long admitted to police he had left his house with the knife but
maintained his intention had been only to 'scare' one of the
protagonists in the melee.
Sheriff Andrew Berry described the offence as “a very serious matter”.
The sheriff who observed that Long was subject to no less than three
bail orders added: “It seems to me that your offending is now out of
control.”
Long was ordered to be remanded in custody pending his reappearance in
court on November 7 when he will be sentenced for the knife offence an
unrelated bicycle theft and a breach of bail, after the sheriff
considers reports.
