Experts destroy wartime relics

A BOMB disposal squad from Faslane arrived in Wick today, to deal with a cache of wartime grenades.
They were uncovered when a found was being dug behind the town's civic centre, the Assembly Rooms.
The centre was closed and a community council meeting had to be cancelled.
The phosphorus grenades, about 144 of them, were of a type issued to the Home Guard during the Second World War.
All of the found ordnance was safely conveyed by the bomb disposal team assisted by Police officers and Highlands Islands Fire & Rescue Service, to a suitable location in Caithness where it has been destroyed. Northern Constabulary would like to thank members of the community for their co-operation during the closure of the Assembly Rooms, which was necessary to remove the ordnance.
