Wartime relics found behind
Wick Assembly Rooms today

A BOMB squad is expected at Wick tomorrow (Tuesday) to deal with a
cache of World War Two hand grenades.
They turned up when an area outside the rear perimeter wall of the
town’s civic centre, the Assembly Rooms, was being excavated for the
installation of a flagpole.
About two dozen of the white phosphorous grenades were discovered, in
boxes. Equipped with detonators, they were issued to the Home Guard
for use against enemy tanks, in the event of an invasion, and are
activated on impact. They were declared obsolete in 1948 when
stockpiles were destroyed for safety reasons.
As well as dealing with the grenades, the bomb squad, from Rosyth, is
expected to check the area for any more of the buried wartime relics.
The local community council’s monthly meeting due, to take place
tonight, was cancelled and a policeman has been posted, at the scene,
as a precaution
The Assembly Rooms is a converted school which was probably used by the
Home Guard for training.
