Motorist faces prison if driving offence is repeated

A MAN, who drove while unfit through drink or drugs, was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work in the community.
Quarry worker Scott Wares was also disqualified from driving for a year. The court was told, previously, that, following a tip-off, on September 3, police located his car travelling on the A99, near Hempriggs, and observed it being driven in an erratic fashion.
They followed the car into Wick and after losing sight of it, temporarily, traced it to Wares. house in the town's Northcote Street and he struggled while being arrested.
Senior fiscal depute, David Barclay, said that there was no indication that Wares was under the influence of drink and a doctor who gave him a test at Wick police station, found that he was unsteady on his feet, his movements were slow and he co-ordination was poor.
Mr Barclay stated: “There was clear evidence of impairment which was, perhaps, more likely to have been caused by a drug or medication, as opposed to alcohol.
Neil Wilson for Wares (23) said that his record was not the worst the court had seen.
He said: “He assures me this is not the start of a downward spiral. The accused is in fulltime employment and is in a steady relationship but his partner who has made it clear that if this behaviour were to continue, it will come to an end.”
Sheriff Andrew Berry, who saw reports, described Wares’ actions has “wholly inappropriate” and observed that that Wares had been granted bail only a few weeks previously, and had put himself in a precarious situation.
However, the sheriff that the accused’s previous convictions were not of a similar nature and felt that the appropriate way to deal with him would be a community payback order.
But Sheriff Berry warned: “If this was to happen again, it would be almost inevitable that you will go to prison and that would be your fault, no-one else’s.”
Wares was also required to continue a drug treatment course with the Caithness Drug and Alcohol forum.
