Cyclist may have been on charity marathon
THE cyclists involved in the fatal road accident at Auckengill yesterday are thought to have been on an end-to-end charity ride.
One of them, a woman-died in the accident. Her male companion was taken to hospital with multiple injuries.
The riders were involved in a collision with an oncoming Nissan Micra, shortly after noon, only seven miles into there John O’ Groat-Land’s End challenge. The car ended up at the edge of a field, next to an abandoned cottage.
The road was closed for the remainder of the day as Northern Constabulary ‘s road policing unit carried out on-the-spot inquiries. The car driver was treated for a minor injury and shock. Officers have appealed to any witnesses to the accident to get in touch with them, on Wick 603551.
The name of the dead woman won’t be disclosed until relatives have been informed.
