In charge of car under the influence of a drug

A THURSO driver, found asleep in his car, was subsequently found to have been under the influence of a drug.
Unemployed Jason McCann (41) of Lord Thurso Court, admitted having been in charge of the car having taken the drug.
It was stated that police on patrol, on July 27, came across the accused’s vehicle parked on the Sibster road, just after 11am. McCann was in the driving seat. His speech was slurred and there was evidence in the car of drug abuse, in the form of a white powder which it was thought to have been a factor in his ability to drive.
Senior fiscal depute, David Barclay said that McCann was taken into custody and was seen by a doctor who confirmed that he had been under the influence of drink or drugs.
Solicitor Neil Wilson said that the drug in question, MDVP, was no longer illegal but had affected the accused’s ability to be in charge of a car.
Sheriff Andrew Berry imposed a 60-hours, level one community payback order on McCann but said he would restrict the disqualification to a year, in light of his income.

Got involved in argument

WICK teenager Kevin Wilson got involved in an argument in Thurso’s Traill Street, and punched one of the parties, Jonathan Wood on the head.
Wilson (18) pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred on the night of May 28, and was ordered to carry out a 60-hours level 1 community payback work.
Solicitor Mr Wilson said that the accused should have walked away from the situation and had since realised “the error of his ways”. The incident had been “a wake-up call”.

Fought with police

Elizabeth Gillespie was given a chance by the sheriff when she appeared for sentence.
Gillespie (24) of Ormlie Road, Thurso, was ordered to carry out a year’s community payback work.
Sheriff Berry, who saw reports, said he had to ensure that similar behaviour- the accused previously admitted fighting with police after being arrested for causing a disturbance - did not happen again, but observed that she had had difficulties in the past but was facing up to them.

Surfer absent from court

A French surfer accused of a knife charge didn’t turn up for his court appearance on Friday.
Charles Martin was said to be competing in an important competition in Spain and didn’t want to let his sponsors down.
Martin (21) from Guadeloupe, denies having a cutlery knife with a serrated blade, in his possession, in West Church Street, Thurso on April 18, while in the town for a surfing competition.
In a progress report on the case, earlier in the week, his solicitor, Neil Wilson indicated that it was possible there could be a resolution to the proceedings, by the date of Martin’s trial, September 28.
