Vending machines also require registration

HIGHLAND COUNCIL'S Trading Standards is reminding all businesses selling tobacco that they have less than three weeks to register with the Scottish Government if they wish to continue to sell tobacco products.
I October is the deadline for tobacco retailers to register on the Scottish Tobacco Retailer Register which has been open for registration since 1St April 2011.
Trading Standards is also reminding those with vending machines on their premises that they too must be registered. A proposed ban on cigarette vending machines in Scotland has been delayed and therefore businesses with vending machines in use after 1 October must ensure they are on the Scottish Tobacco Retailer Register.
Retailers who fail to register by the deadline will be breaking the law and could receive a £200 fixed penalty notice, with those continually breaching tobacco laws facing a ban from selling cigarettes and tobacco.
Registration is free and applications can be made quickly and easily on-line at www.tobaccoregisterscotland.org (http://www.tobaccoregisterscotland.org/) or by downloading an application form from the website and posting. Those without internet access can request a copy of the form from Highland Council’s Trading Standards by telephone on 01463 228700 or by calling in to the office at 38 Harbour Road, Inverness, IV1 1UF.
