Watching the weather channel about Hurricane Katie which at the moment is around the Bahamas.

From the weather models on the tv, it is showing that it 'might' hit North Western Scotland as a category 1 Hurricane 75mph on Monday morning.

I am no weather expert on this and I'm sure tugs will give more information than I can. I'm only going by whats being said on the news.

A category 1 Hurricane is Force 12 on the Beaufort Scale and this is 118 KMH or 73 MPH or 64 Knots or 32.5 Meters per Second.

I was stationed at Cape Wrath for nearly 5 years and during that time we had 9 Storms that registered over 60 Meters per second. That was the most the equipment would register so we did not know the exact wind speed. Even so that equates to winds well over 100 MPH so a wind of 75 MPH is nothing unusual for the West Coast.

Usually a Hurricane that starts over in America dissapates quite a bit over the Atlantic before it reaches the UK

I spotted the system a day or two ago and have just been watching it. The chart below is from the 12 noon charts today and shows the system just hitting the west coast of scotland, it's still quite a low low and also quite tight isobars so some good wind in it. I'll be watching with more intensity the nearer it gets but as kodiak says it is liable to dissipate a bit more yet.

As is said above, a hurricane in America equates to a good day for hanging out the washing here! Or drying stooks now that the sheets on the binder are fixed ! ;)

Yes the Ham Shanks go a bit too far if a wee breeze heads their way. It is funny watching them when a 'STORM' with 45mph comes. They even shut down most of the schools and work places when Hurricane Irene hit here 2 weeks ago.

What a load of nonsense it was too, this part of South Carolina got next to nothing.

As a precaution, I hid in the toilet looking in the mirror..............It was just Me,Myself and Irene.
