Joy riders 'bumped off' town circuit

ANTI-SPEEDBUMPS appear to have had the desired effect at discouraging joy riders who delight in repeatedly roaring past Wick’s Norseman Hotel, to the detriment of its business.
Police reported the last night’s community council meeting that there had been only one complaint about the anti-social driving and the bumps, installed last month, “appear to be working”.
In a written report to councillors, the police said that the incidents logged last month, included, 24 vandalisms, seven assaults, 19 breaches of the peace, 12 thefts and 10 road traffic accidents. Road safety remained an ongoing issue, with Caithness reporting double the amount of fatalities, compared to other Highland areas.
Chairwoman Coreen Campbell described that as "a major concern" and highlighted the valuable support being given by the Mackenzie family to a campaign to try and reduce the tragic toll on young drivers.
Commenting on the recurring anti-social offending, described by one member as “upsetting”, Mrs Campbell said she used to think they had a nice, law-abiding community and added: It is is quite worrying that there is not more respect shown.”
The council hopes to get detection figures for their next meeting in November.
