There are toilets not to far from Woolies in both Wick and Thurso. If your son could not hang on (from first request for the toilet) till he got to them, maybe you should take him to the doctors, most 2 yr olds can hold on for a little while. It may be worth getting him checked to see if he has a bladder problem. I hope his is ok:D

He can hold on fine normally but tends to wait til the last minute. Usually te town hall open but doesnt seem to be these days. I was just so annoyed this isnt the only shop there are very few that does allow. I wouldnt care if it was me but he is only 2.

I have had the same problems.
In Thurso if your child needs & the town hall is shut there is nowhere nearby.
It is a disgrace. :(

I was thinking the same thing myself today. Went out to lunch but didnt need the loo after so we went for a look about the shops. half way down the road i really needed to go (i have ibs so my tumm tends to play russian roulette with me)
had to wlak rather briskly up to the central.

there really should be some public loos in Thurso. I am surprised the co-op dont have any built though.

Fluff, there are some public loos in Thurso, near the Tourist Information Centre, but they're too far if you're busting for a wee. :(

It's not really a case of where the toilets are though is it? It's more a case of (the guy from) Woolies getting some common sense, some courtesy and letting a kid go to the toilet rather than on their floor.

It's disgusting that we now have to watch kids pee themselves thanks to big business and their wonderous rule books.

I didnt know the co-op now has toliets. I can't say i saw any signs to them but then maybe i wasnt looking hard enough.
I am just glad i am able to hold on for a wee while, unlike the poor little lad to had to pee himself.
just as well it is not winter otherwise he would have gotten rather cold

i used to work in a shop and we werent allowed to let the public use our toilets either due to health and safety, as we had to go through the store and if anything were to fall on say a child the management would then be liable so i can see it from both points of view

To be fair to the shops I imagine their loos are not suitable for the public and there may be various reasons they are restricted to staff. Also, if it became known they did allow the public to use them, then they could have a problem with more people wanting to. What we need are more public loos, especially in Thurso, At least in Wick there is one in the town centre, one by the Shore and one in the Co-op if you're over that way. It is a long way to the one in Thurso and now the town hall is closed it can be quite difficult. We definitely need one in the town centre.

A bit of common sense should prevail. At my work place we don't let the public use the toilets, but will let children use them if they ask.
16 years ago, when my son was 2 years old, he got caught short in Woolies, and I took him up Woolies lane and let him 'pee' into a drain. Thankfully there was no police about as he may have landed in court.

[lol] i totaly agree, i have a daughter who is nearly two , and know how difficult it can be as i have 4 older children. At two they cant always give you the warning needed to walk a distance to the nearest public toilet , iv even known a friend who put a nappy on her son while shopping due to a similar situation.Small children should be allowed to use toilets if they are desperate and no public ones are close to hand.

Yes a bit of common sense SHOULD prevail but doesn't always.

I agree, but I know that Reid's (which isn't that far from Woolies), Jamieson's & Johnson's Bakeries would never turn away a child in need, neither would any of the hotels, in otherwords pretty much anywhere where the it's not just staff members who use the loos.

I'd guess that even the CASE office wouldn't have too much of a problem.

well done for your little boy for being toilet trained at the age of two i know off alot wee ones that arn't by that age and have to admit that one of mine wasn't at 2 (he was more like 2 and a half) .

i've had that problem before myself at woolworths, and once i had to take him around the back of the building (i know, sorry) .

you should try Reids bakery let you in with little ones,

co-op have a staff toilet upstairs near the post office but they don't always let you , depends on who you ask ... plus they have to escort you beacuse its just beside staff lockers.

ooh and graham beggs let my son go in their toilet last month while we were in.

I was always told that a Police Station is a good place to try. If urinate in public it's an offence and if it appears that you asked to use one of their toilets and they refused it wouldn't look too good.

I was told this by a nice WPC in Glasgow City Centre some years ago while out, ahem, 'celebrating' and finding myself caught short and looking for a public loo. Probably too much detail ... but there you go :)

I think it is about time that there was an investigation into the fact that every child that enters Woolworths needs to go to the toilet! ;)

Surely the parents would be wih the child then and if they fell it would be the childs responsibility. In this cirumstance I couldn't see any more danger to the child than walking around the shop in the first place!

Health and safety is one thing. But as a store worker, and a parent, myself. The young ones will always be taken to the staff toilets.

The other option for toilets near Woolies is the social work office, now I am sure they wouldn't turn away a desperate child:D

Any cafe', pub or restaurant has to have toilets for their customers. I am sure that no one would refuse a child their use. (near wollies in Wick you have alot of them)

the thing is it is great that some of the shops will let you use the loo, esp a child but for tourists or people who dont really know the area, they are not really going to know which shops to go into and ask.
and importantly, what about people who have mobilty problems etc..
there are not any disabled toilets

My 2 year old daughter is currently potty training and can keep dry during the night but we are finding it very hard to keep dry during the day. By the time we get to any toilet she has already done it. (still wearing nappies though.) I am reluctant to put her in pants because there is a few places that don't let you or your child use the toilet and with other by the time you've asked then eventually got there it's to late. I feel that I can't run into a shop and ask to use a toilet when I not in there as a customer already.
When in the Co-op a few weeks ago, one of the members of staff overheard my little girl ask for the toilet and me tell her that she would have to wait as there was no toilet but the member of staff came over and asked if we wanted to go. A Big Thank you.
However there is places like the redwood who do not let anyone (other than customers) use their toilets. However I'm not sure if they would object to young children. I know that they are now on metered water (possibly other businesses are now) and therefore it is costing them everytime someone flushes the toilet or washes their hands.
Reids, Johnstones, Jimbews and central is the best bets but we still really could do with a public toilet.

I've got to tell you all how proud I am. While typing me last post my daughter went through to the bathroom removed her trousers and nappy. climbed up on the toilet herself and had a pee and was shouting "did it ma self, good girl mummy". I'm delighted.

also just to remind peeps.. wetherspoons has toilets as well..
many a times ive gone in.. when in need.. and just asked for the keys for teh disabled toilet downstairs as it has nappy changing facilities.. they are very nice about it..
i remember many a times as a child my mum squatting us down outside to wee when need was dire! *grins*
what can they say to you?
when a little one has to go they have to go.. and i had rather them pee on the pavment than theirselves!
a bit of water over it and all is well!
no one seems to think anything about their dogs doing their buisness anywhere and everywhere so why would they gasp in shock if a little one.. has to wee on the ground when nothing else is available?

Very true Brandy, never thought of it this way before. I know I have had to let my little ones do their business outside especially when there are out in the forest or somewhere like that.
I do wish that some shopkeepers were more understanding about this problem, you will probably find that the ones who say 'no' are probably the ones who do not have children themselves and do not understand how important it is that a child has to go when needing.
Most family businesses would just let the child go no problem. I myself have went into the central to let the kids go without staying and buying but if it is for the kids then they dont mind. I won't do it for myself as I feel more guilty and can hold on so no problem there.

I really pity the pensioners that go to the Co-Op in Thurso/Post Office as they probably cant hold on as well as most people, plus if they did require to go to the toilet, it would be a climb upstairs and also supervised like a child. If you ask me it is a silly place for the Post Office.

If my memory serves you are not allowed to be turned away from a toilet if you are a young child or pregnant. This is disgusting behaviour from a company that sells, amongst other things, childrens goods.

How is a child supposed to hold on, they have tiny bladders and are just learning to control them.

My son is about to turn 2 and I hope ALL shops will allow him to use their toilets should he need to.

Whilest I agree that the lack of toilets in Thurso is atrocious most shops will allow you to use their's if necessary. As for being "supervised like a child" I can fully understand that. Most shops are tight for space and stock can often be found stored near the staff toilets and usually the toilets are beside or require you going through the stock room. You can't honestly expect the public to have the run of the staff only areas can you?

 Along the same lines, I had run out of spare nappies a couple of months ago and needed to change my son "urgently". I went into Sutherlands chemist. They gave me nappies and allowed me to change him there and then. I was delighted with there service. Congratulations and thank you from a delighted parent. (I did buy a bag of nappies from them).
