Police tracked post office raids suspects

A JURY heard today how a search was mounted for two men sought by police in connection with a serious of post office robberies in the Highlands and north-east of Scotland.
They were put under surveillance after a break-in at the post-office/shop at the tiny community of Glenuig, on the south west coast of Inverness-shire.
A road block was set up and John Hind and Matthew Peters were subsequently spotted at the Morrison’s store, in Ft William, Wick, Sheriff Court was told today. Hind, 54, from Colne, Lancashire and Peters, 40, from Bournemouth, deny breaking into several post offices and commercial offices and stealing cash totalling £34,497 and stock amounting to £10,508. It included the safe and contents allegedly taken by them from the Glenuig post office/shop, on October 11, 2007. The offences occurred between July 27 and October 11, 2007.
Detective Constable Alan Gibson said he observed Hind and Peters getting out of a white Vauxhall Omega in the Morrison’s car park and entering the store’s cafe. Afterwards, the accused were tracked on various roads in the area but disappeared.
The court heard, earlier, that another Northern Constabulary officer, D.D. Alicen Winston, was present when Hind’s home, at Birtwhistle Avenue, Colne, was searched by police, on October 16, 2007. Items including a computer and two mobile telephones were removed.
Hind and Peters have also pleaded not guilty to stealing a car and using it to assault police officer Andrew Cooper to the danger of his life while he was signalling them to stop on the A830 Fort William to Mallaig road. The trial, which has heard evidence from some 60 witnesses, continues next week.
