Councillors back high speed trains north of the border)

MEMBERS of Highland Council’s TECS committee have given their support to the campaign headed by Glasgow and Edinburgh city councils to ensure that the proposed UK high speed train link be extended to include Scotland.
Currently the proposed high speed route is planned to initially run from London to Birmingham before extending to include Manchester and Leeds.
As part of their campaign, the leaders of Glasgow and Edinburgh councils have written to all of Scotland’s other cities seeking their support. In their letter they highlight that links to Scotland would be included but these would be on the existing track infrastructure and would not deliver enough of a reduced journey time to attract air passengers onto the trains.
Chairman of the TECS Committee, Councillor John Laing said: “Members agreed to send a letter of support to the campaign to include Glasgow and Edinburgh in the development of a high speed rail network for the UK. We can see how having such a link could bring economic benefits to the whole of Scotland and it is important we ensure tourists to the UK are not put of travelling north of the border. At the same time we will be continuing to press for improvements to our own local rail and air services and to expand the overall transport network for the Highlands and its links with the rest of the UK and beyond.”
