Can someone clarify if, generally speaking, it is cheaper to book a holiday as a package with the likes of thomson etc or to book it as flights and hotels and transfers on their own? if so, can you recomend places to book? Im deperate to go to dubai next year sometime and if I can save a decent amount of cash douing it all on my own then I will do that!

We find it cheaper to book stuff individually.

I check flight prices with http://www.skyscanner.net and hotels with http://www.onthebeach.co.uk then if I find a hotel I like the look of I google it and try and find it cheaper else where. http://www.hotels4u.com seems pretty good with hotels and they will do transfers as well. We are looking to go to Majorca in the October holidays and as a package it is around the £2k for the 5 of us, booking things separately I think I will save around £600.

Self catering is sometimes a good option too. (Some great apartments on actual resorts if you are worried about being out in the sticks). See
www.holiday-rentals.co.uk (http://www.holiday-rentals.co.uk) (have independant reviews)
www.holidaylettings.co.uk (http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk) (excellent search facilities e.g. "car not necessary", "air con", "private pool", etc. They are linked to trip advisor).
Transfers are easy to find and there's usually an option to book those when you book your flight.
