When a finger puts a spoke in the wheel of a cycling marathon from Land's End
AN EDINBURGH couple’s plan to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary with a repeat of their honeymoon Lands End to John O’ Groats cycle run, ran into trouble.
It was more a case of a finger in the spoke, as well as a spoke in the wheel for Kenny Taylor and his wife Lynn, recently.
They had pedalled a mere five miles from Land’s End when it happened... Kenny heard a strange noise coming from the front wheel of his bike. Instead of stopping to investigate, the corporate banker though he could fiddle it right while continuing to pedal.
The option proved a wrong, painful one, for the next he knew, his finger was caught in the spokes, jamming the wheel and sending Kenny sprawling onto the roadway. The next stop was hospital where he was found to have a fractured humorous bone and dislocated shoulder.
Kenny said: ”It was excrutiating, not just physically, but emotionally, because it was frustrating not to be able to fulfil our plans” but consoled himself with belief that it could have been a lot worse.
He explained: “The accident happened on a busy road and if there had been a car coming at the time, the outcome could have been very different.”
The Taylors, who live in the Willowbrae district of Edinburgh, had to cancel their anniversary in Gretna where they had intended renewing their wedding vows
Ironically, it was Kenny’s first accident in 30 years cycling. The couple have rescheduled their 1981 marathon for next year, to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The famous, thousand-mile marathon, took them 16 days then.
